Morning wake up.jpeg

Overview

Experience waking up to the sounds and smells of the African bush. Lying in your luxury safari tent, you watch the big red African sun slowly rise above the horizon. Carrying a fresh herbal tea, you wander to the yoga deck for a gentle yoga class, guiding you to connect deeply to your true nature and that of the surrounding wildlife.

You then jump into your safari truck and explore Entumoto’s private conservancy with our expert Maasai safari guides and spotters who will show you and teach you about zebras, elephants, lions, cheetahs, giraffes, birds of prey and much more. You’ll hear stories from the local Maasai, you’ll go on walking safaris through the bush, you’ll eat picnics under the shade of acacia trees, you'll swim in pool, relax in the sauna, enjoy sundowners on the deck watching antelope run across the planes, sing around the campfire, and leave your everyday life far, far behind.

This is a unique opportunity to experience the culture of Africa, to immerse yourself in the rhythm of the natural world, to embody the stillness of the wilderness and to give back to a rare and truly sustainable conservation project.

Where?

Entumoto Private Safari Camp - a luxury tented safari camp in a private conservancy in the Maasai Mara, Kenya. The location is elevated in the hills of the Megwarra escarpment. It is part of the Siana conservancy, on the border of the Maasai Mara, between the park gates Oloolaimutia and Sekenani. The camp is in a secluded valley with its own private water point called 'Eden'. In the evening, before sunset, you often see elephants, buffalo, giraffe, zebra and impala all drinking here together. An unforgettable experience.

Conservation

Included in the price is a US$560+ donation to the conservancy and the local community. We will have an opportunity to get to know the Maasai people and to learn about the work they are doing to conserve the precious natural landscape.

Highlights

Luxury Tented Safari Camp
Elephants by the camp.jpeg

Our home for the week is Entumoto which means ‘Meeting Point’ - this fits well for a yoga retreat - as yoga means to yoke, to come together, to meet one’s own true nature.

Entumoto is an elegant, authentic, stylish camp with a history going back to the 1920's. It is family-owned and run by Swedish and Maasai families. It is situated in a beautifully secluded valley overlooking the Maasai Mara. It has a unique position within its own wildlife conservancy with direct access to the park. The camp is beautifully decorated offering comfortable and spacious accommodation with good quality fresh local food and organic garden produce. It’s an excellent choice for families with children, as it has a pool and six large sharing tents. Entumoto has a friendly team of local staff who provide great service and are highly rated by guests. They also have experienced guides who will make your stay truly memorable.

Accommodation
entumoto-safari-camp-maasai-mara-masai-mara-maasai-mara-national-reserve-interior.webp

The camp has two tiers of accommodation split into two sites, the Main area and the Toto area. The Main area is the more luxurious choice, as the site has the pool, pool bar, sauna, yoga deck and massage tents within it. Each tent in the Main area has it's own stunning view over the conservancy from the tent veranda. The Main area is a 3 minute walk downhill to the dining area and the main lounge.

The Toto area is the smaller of the two sites. It is next to the dining area and main lounge. All guests have access to all the facilities like the pool but, they are a 5 minute walk uphill from the Toto site. The views from the Toto tents are not quite as spectacular as those from the Main area, but you are still immersed in nature and surrounded by wildlife.

All the tents are made of a multilayered canvas, are custom designed and set a hundred meters apart from each other for your privacy. More detail on the different accommodation options in the pricing options below.

The video below also helps to give a better feel for the accommodation and the facilities.

Facilities
Swimming pool.jpeg

The main guest area consists of a sitting area, dining area, bar, fire, library, games cupboard and veranda with views of the abundant countryside. Beautifully handcrafted artefacts, bespoke antiques, lavish sofas, books and candlelight will transport guests back to the heyday of the romantic classic safari.

Main meals are served in the dining area and pre dinner drinks and snacks in the lounge.

The Main site has a pool with sun beds, a pool house, pool bar, sauna and a yoga deck for you to enjoy at your leisure. The massage parlour and the sauna are open for relaxing after a long safari drive.  You can also book manicures and pedicures if you feel like a bit of TLC.

Wifi is available in the lounge as we now have satellite broadband! Safaricom mobile phone signal is good quality throughout the camp.

Game drives and walking safaris
Maasai Mara elephants and truck.jpeg

You will be guided on both day and night safari drives in open-air comfortable 4x4 vehicles around the private conservancy. The guides will take you at your pace, stopping to spend time with the animals so you have the chance to take in their magnificence. Stopping off for a picnic lunch or sundowners on Lion Rock will allow you to become really present with the surroundings and bask in the serenity of the landscape. You will also venture out on at least one walking safari during the week. This creates an opportunity connect more deeply to the land. It heightens the senses to the aliveness of the area, and brings you closer to the cycles of nature that makes this conservancy so completely unique.

Yoga classes
drone-13.jpg

>> Huge thanks to Nicci Parry, for leading such beautiful yoga on our 2023 Safari and Yoga week. <<

In the morning, we will have the option to do a sunrise yoga class at 7am. Or, if we venture out on an early morning drive, there will be a class on offer at around 11am, once we're back at camp. An afternoon yoga session will also be available at around 4pm, prior to sundowners . All classes are optional and all levels are welcome but a willingness to explore different ways of moving and an open mind will help. There will be lots of variations offered to suit us all!

3rd - 9th November with Lisa Butler

Lisa Butler is leading our yoga classes during our first retreat week. Lisa's classes are guided by her love of anatomy and physiology and the way in which the body wants to constantly heal itself. She believes that moving and breathing enables the tissues and the fluid systems to pulse in an intelligent and healing way, connecting us to our own innate wisdom. When we tune in and truly listen to what is going on, our mental, emotional, physical and psychic bodies can resonate with mindfulness and clarity.

Lisa is passionate about the power of yoga. She says it helps us to transcend our limitations and to find increasing freedom in our lives. Lisa enjoys assisting others in their journey within and helps her clients to find acceptance and peace no matter where they are in their yoga practice.

For more information on Lisa, please see her website, Instagram page or her bio in the hosts section below.

10th - 16th November with Zoe Warren

During our second retreat week, Zoe Warren will lead us in her fluid, playful style of yoga and embodied movement, helping us to drop out of our whirring minds and into the wisdom of our bodies. We will experience our bodies in a host of different, primal ways; reaching, stretching, crouching, rippling and also resting to release and refresh.

We will reconnect to ourselves as the animals we already are and embody the animals that surround us in the African bush. We'll find a rhythm to our movement and breath that mirrors the nature around us.

This will be a chance to tend to our physical body, to ignite more vitality, and to improve our focus and the quality of our thoughts. An opportunity to connect inwards and find a joy in the subtle beauty of movement and mindfulness.

For more information on Zoe, and the style of yoga she leads, please see her website, Instagram page or her bio in the hosts section below.

We are organically minded and diet conscious and the chefs can create individual dishes for each of our guests according to dietary requirements.

Sundowners and evenings round the camp fire
Sundowners 3.jpeg

No safari is complete without sundowners - we will set up on Lions Rock to look over the escarpment, or out on the planes to watch the African sun go down while sharing stories from what we’ve seen that day.

Evenings round the campire will be steeped in local culture. There will be an opportunity to sing with the locals and to learn about their unique healing techniques, passed down through generations.

Local community projects
community.jpeg

Guests are encouraged to partake in Entumoto’s community projects, which include a local school and a rescue centre for young girls. Community engagement, Entumoto’s conservation ethos and the prolific wildlife are the three pillars which provide a holistic and awe-inspiring experience for all guests.

All the inhabitants in the community are directly benefiting from the conservation and tourism Entumoto brings. The land is leased from local families. They each receive a fixed yearly lease and also a variable lease based on the number of guests who visit.

In agreement with local families, a jointly run conservancy organisation was created. Entumoto has frequent meetings with large groups of Maasai to co-manage the land. This is a very important step for the Maasai of this area, as it gives them a democratic and well-governed organisation, which works for the benefit of the community.

The Main Site
Entomoto+Camp+-+Main+Camp+Family+Tent+_1.jpeg

The Main site has 9 tents. There are 4 luxury sharing tents, 2 double tents, and 3 twin tents.

Each sharing tent includes two double/twin rooms, two bathrooms and a central lounge with a fireplace - comfortably furnished with a table and two divans (which can double up as two spare single beds). The sharing tents can fit up to 6 people.

Each tent has its own veranda where you can enjoy a coffee in the morning, a tea on the sofas in the afternoon or a sundowner in the evening… and remember you are in the African bush so keep your eyes peeled for wildlife in the camp.

All tents have electricity, hot showers, double sinks, dressing gowns, hot water bottles and verandas. They are made of a multilayered canvas, are custom designed and set a hundred meters apart from each other for your privacy.

The Main tents are the more luxurious choice, as the site has the pool, the pool bar, the massage tents, the sauna and the yoga deck close by. Each tent in the Main area also has it's own breath-taking view over the conservancy.

The Toto Site
Toto tent 3.jpeg

The Toto site is the more affordable accommodation option. The site is smaller and is closer to the dining area and the main lounge.

The site has 5 tents. There are 2 large sharing tents, 1 double tent and 2 twin tents.

The Toto tents are furnished in a similar fashion to the Main tents. Each tent has their own private veranda. They do not have the same spectacular views over the conservancy. However, they are still surrounded by lush vegetation and wildlife.

All guests can enjoy the pool, sauna and treatment area. However, these facilities are a 5 minute walk uphill from the Toto site.

All tents have electricity, hot showers, double sinks, dressing gowns, hot water bottles and seating on the veranda. They are made of a multilayered canvas, are custom designed and set a hundred meters apart from each other for your privacy.

Testimonials
Family Safari Testimonial.jpeg

We visited Entumoto with our two children 9 and 11. It was the perfect introduction to safari for them. Entumoto is a hidden sanctury of serenity - just heaven. I can’t think of enough superlatives to describe our experience. The sharing tent 'Eagles Nest' was absolutely wonderful. Possibly the largest space we’ve ever experienced in the most remote corner of the world. Everyone is so attentive and helpful; Wilson who put our hot water bottles in each bed and brought us coffee and hot chocolates in the morning. No mean feat in the dark up a very steep incline! Wilson you are a hero. Sebastian and Lewis looked after us at meal times. The food is just out of this world. It’s hard to believe that you are so remote when you have such amazing food. We had many breakfasts and lunches out in the Mara. Such a truly magnificent experience setting up our picnics next to grazing wildebeast! The camp has its own conservancy teaming with their own game. In fact on the way to the camp from the airstrip we saw lions, elephants, giraffe, zebra, wildebeast and antelope. The vast views over the Maasai Mara are unrivalled. The camp has its own watering hole which attracts all kinds of game. I know you probably won’t believe me but the zebras come so close to the camp you can practically touch them. On the way back from one game drive there were 400 buffalo. It’s just unbelievable. The camp is eco friendly and they are very conscious about educating guests to protect the local environment. There is a garden where they grow the vegetables you will eat - well worth a tour round to see. It’s all very sustainable and self sufficient. But really the stand out part of our trip were our safari guides Purity and Alex. What can we say about our dear friends who took us on such wonderful adventures for 4 days. We experienced such wonders with them and laughed a lot. They were funny and chatty, knowledgeable and caring. They both care so much about their Mara and protecting the wildlife. We felt blessed to have had their company. They will remain friends in our hearts forever. Thank you Purity and Alex for your expertise and kindness. One day we hope to meet again.

Family of four, from Essex, UK

The highlight of my week. I so look forward to Zoe's classes. They are such fun, so playful and different to all other yoga classes I do. I find myself immersed completely in the moment and the movement. And my imagination gets entwined with many of the sequences we do.
